An independent investigation into the way a family was dealt with after they reported alleged sexual abuse by a former coach in York has concluded that they were ‘treated terribly by the club’ and that British Gymnastics ‘could and should have done more to support’ the family. The Independent Complaints Process Decision found British Gymnastics failed to properly investigate the report of sexual abuse.
I've spent weeks working on this story and it's good to finally be able to report it for radio, on the BBC News website here and on TV.

I find it so difficult to understand how any club could get away with such appalling treatment of a family and their child. I'm sure there should be an official name, almost a diagnosis of this phenomenon where a 'famous' individual like Stan Wild is involved in 'alleged' abuse.....call it the "Jimmy Saville" effect. Where everyone 'knows' but no-one acts appropriately on the information. Those that then act are gaslight!
ReplyDeleteSurely the club had to tell other people about the family's complaint. They must have to to check if anyone else had the same problem. My son used to do a different gym club and any little thing was to to parents so kids could be safest

DeleteYork Gym was family run, so not Just Stan wild, but his family are complicit in covering up for him. They not only covered up the abuse, they banned the victim and their family and continued to run as before with no safeguarding in place! British Gymnastics failed to act and in doing so, put more girls at risk! To be held accountable after 8 years is disgusting!

I'd like to say I'm surprised but those who cover up for abusers are stuck in a cycle. At some point they will wake up and smell the excrement they've been spreading and the lies they've been drawn into.
